On This Day – 1 August
The Warsaw Uprising, a major operation to liberate Warsaw from the Nazi’s during WWII, began.
The uprising lasted just over two months and was timed to coincide with the Russian approach to the Eastern border of the city and take advantage of the German retreat.
The Russian forces however halted their advance before reaching the city proper giving the Nazi forces an opportunity to regroup, destroy the city and defeat the Polish resistance.
