It appears that an increase in political and economic instability has led to an increase in the looting of ancient sites in Egypt. Archaeologists have used satellite images of the Nile Valley and Delta taken between 2002 and 2013 and noted that looting levels doubled from 2009-2010 in connection with the GFC, before doubling again from 2011 to 2013 following the revolution in Egypt.
