9 September – On this day

The first Norman king of England, reigning from 1066 – 1087, died on this day in 1087. William I or William the Bastard as he was also variously known began his conquest of England in 1066 and was crowned king on Christmas the same year. In 1086 William had ordered the compilation of the Domesday book.
