Eparchius Avitus Augustus was proclaimed Western Roman Emperor by Theodoric II after the death of his predecessor Petronius Maximus.
Avitus had been recalled to service in the Spring of 455 by the emperor after he had retired sometime in 440, he was elevated to the rank of Magister Militum and sent in an embassy to Theodoric II’s court by Maximus after he had succeeded his father.
When the report of the death of Maximus and the sacking of Rome by Vandals reached Toulouse Theodoric accliamed Avitus Emperor.
