2 May – The General Belgrano Argentina’s second largest naval vessel is hit and sunk by two Tigerfish torpedoes.

The British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror fired the torpedoes that sunk the General Belgrano, which was a WWII dated vessel. The trigger for the attack was the Belgrano leaving the 200 mile exclusion zone, the Argentine vessel was carry about 1,000 crew and the sinking saw some 368 lives lost. The sinking of the Belgrano became the most controversial event of the Falklands War.
