On this day 20 March 235: Maximinus Thrax became emperor of Rome. Maximinus remained ruler Rome for just over 3 years before dying 10 may 238 in Aquileia whilst trying to put down a senatorial revolt.

Apparently son of a Gothic father and Alanic mother born in either Moesia or Thrace Maximinus was seen as a barbarian and not a proper Roman by the Senate, even though Caracalla had granted citizenship to all freeborn members of the Empire. Maximinus hated the Roman nobility that he felt plotted against him, largely because of his origins.

He was assassinated by members of Legio II Parthica who also kill his son and chief ministers while camped outside of Aquileia.
