On This Day – 26 May 1967
On this day fifty years ago was the release of the Beatles’ eighth studio album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It would go on to win four Grammy Awards the following year, including Album of the Year and was the first rock album to receive this title.
After retiring from touring in 1966, the Beatles felt they could experiment more in their recordings as they would no longer be expected to reproduce the songs on stage. Sgt. Pepper would become an early concept album and would continue the development of the Beatles’ sound. In 2003 Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
