It is with sadness that History Bytez relays the news of the death of a colleague and friend most recently of the Classics department at UTAS. Dr Geoff Adams passed away too young on Sunday at the age of only 40, I worked with Geoff for several years in his time at UNE we shared many a beer and discussion about all things history, he was an enthusiastic lover of the past and clearly instilled that passion in his students. History Bytez would like to send its condolences not only to his family, friends and colleagues but also his children and wife Nicole.
He will be missed.
Vale Geoff

Did anyone think that they should pass on condolences to Geoff’s family?

Hi Max, his parents live in Brisbane. As does 1 of his sisters. The other sister lives in Sydney. Geoff’s 2 children live in Hobart still. If you’re looking at writing such an article, I believe that you should look into that sort of thing.

Fair enough Kendall, In my defence I had never written anything like this before and was just trying to say goodbye to a friend.

Geoff hadn’t been with his wife Nicole for over two years. They had both gone their separate ways, and had moved on.

Hi I am Nicole. I just found this and was extremely moved. I loved and adored Geoff completely. He was gentle, clever, complex, and a very emotionally understanding person. We were great friends for quite a while before becoming partners and in many ways Geoff healed my past hurts and trauma. I will never stop thanking him in my heart for his love and gentleness. I don’t think I ever had one boring conversation with him. He always stopped to listen and try to understand my thoughts and feelings. His musicality and his taste in music were beyond cool and we spent countless hours together rocking out and chatting endlessly.
And yes we had moved on from each other, but if you have ever truly loved and been loved you will know that you that person never ever leaves your heart, in life, and now I realise, also in death.
Believe what you will about life and what is on the other side but in my deepest sorrow Geoff sent me this song. This is so incredibly typical of him – he was always so excellent at communicating his passion and emotions through music. And again… thanks sweet Geoff, I will always always love you. Sorry I couldn’t stay with you. I know you understood why. I wish I could have taken your sadness and locked it away in a box for you but I didn’t know how. You gave me so much…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHQngnnHE_0
Please watch the video till the end. His message was lyrical and beautiful like him and now Geoff is free. Dr Adams I fell in love with you the second I met you.

I am devastated to learn that Geoff has passed away. He was my lecturer at Monash University in Melbourne. A true intellect, a talent, and an inspiration to us all. My belated condolences to all his family and friends. The last time I saw him at Utas we spent some time reflecting on life, love, and his favourite band Clutch. Thank You Maxx. I only found out about Geoff via your post.

Geoff mentored me at UTAS. We both finished the same day – I remember submitting my thesis as he packed his office. He was one of my favourite people. I miss him immensely.

A year since Geoff decided to rock out in a parallel universe. He made Classics cool. I miss him every day x
