2 September – Shifting US Policy

Following the agreement made in July and later detailed negotiations, a deal is now ratified between Britain and the USA.

This deal will see Britain get 50 old destroyers, veterans of World War I, but desperately needed for escort work, in return for bases granted to the United States in the West Indies and Bermuda.

This is an important stage in Roosevelt’s efforts to develop a more active foreign policy and accustom the American public to actively supporting the Allies.
